Duvet is a word whose origin is French and means down in that language. A duvet is therefore a cozy item that is filled with the down (soft feathers) of birds. Duvets are used in place of quilts on beds to provide you warm comfort and as such are also sometimes known as comforters. They are thinner than quilts and when not being used can act as a bedspread.
There are three reasons you cover a duvet. One is so that the duvet itself remains clean as it cannot be washed. You simply remove and wash the cover itself when it becomes dirty. The second is because it provides you even more warmth because of the extra layer of material it uses. The third reason is to accentuate the appearance of the duvet in contrast to the color theme you use for your bedroom.
A duvet cover is therefore usually made of washable cotton to allow the duvet inside it to breathe in air. Duvet covers are available in a diverse range of colors, styles, and designs. Choosing a readymade duvet cover has three requirements to it, namely choosing the size, choosing the design style and color theme, and choosing the material.
The size of a duvet cover needs to be not more than 2 inches bigger on each side than the specific size of the bed you use. A bed may be king size, queen/full size, twin size, or rarely what is known as California king size.
The king size bed has width and length dimensions of 92 inches by (104 to 106) inches. Those for the queen/full size are (85 to 90) inches by (91 to 92) inches. The twin size bed has dimensions of (63 to 68) inches by (85 to 88) inches respectively. The California king size bed has huge dimensions of 102 inches by 99 inches.
Choosing the color and material of a duvet cover is usually a matter of personal preference and budget. As far as the design style of a duvet cover is concerned it is available in a zipped version or one which has tie-up straps attached to it at the edges. A duvet cover may alternatively have a buttoned up design or it may be equipped with a Velcro type attachment.
With a zipped up duvet cover, inserting the duvet inside the cover becomes very easy. Simply unzip the cover, place the duvet inside the cover and again zip up. The disadvantage is if the zip is damaged during zipping up or unzipping it may require the whole contraption to be replaced. Sometimes the zip catch may poke you and disturb your sleep. With a tie-up, buttoned-up or Velcro design duvet cover, you need to dress the duvet with the cover after every wash, which may be a hassle.
You can use either of two alternative color themes for the duvet cover depending on personal preference. You can either choose the color theme of the duvet cover to go with the color of the décor in your bedroom or deliberately choose a different color theme to contrast with the décor. The price of a cotton duvet cover is upwards of $45 approximately.
